I like designers who create interesting projects just for the fun of it. But most of all, I’m always open to follow these artists who are so creative that just from a piece of their project you can come up with a new idea for your own work.
When I first heard about Jon Newman (not the “Love Me Again” guy) I researched a bit about him and after reading a few of his interviews and look on his project I definitely wanted him to be on our “Bannersnack Ad Talk” interview project. Could you tell us briefly about your background?
I went to Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and then moved up to New York City right after graduation and spent my entire career there. (Aside from a three month freelance stint in Rome, Italy.) While in New York I worked at Pentagram for a year and then at MTV’s in-house design team for five years before establishing my own studio called Daydreams & Nightschemes.
While at art school I ended up taking a graphic design class. It was basically love at first sight. It’s going on ten years and I’m actually speaking at my former college this September.
Do you have any rules that you live by?
Make crazy-weird shit.
What difficulties did you face at the beginning of your career?
Everyone thinks they’re a rock-star designer—I had to get over my own ego.
Are there any things you wish you knew at the beginning of your career?
Don’t wait for the perfect project/client to come along, create it now!
How do you stay engaged and creative?
Lots of personal projects.
What is the biggest inspirations for your career?
Asia.
What values are important to you when you’re designing?
Scale, bigger is always better!
Which part of the design process do you enjoy the most?
Concepting.
What do you think which are the most important aspects when it comes to defining a good design?
Only one, does it properly address the specific audience?
